Looking Ahead

I began to blog just to chronicle the journey I am making. It has become a significant part of my own devotional life. As a part of that journey, and in keeping with Peter Maurin's (co-founder of the Catholic Worker) recognition of the need for ongoing clarification of thought, I would like to invite you to join me for my daily consideration of the Means and Aims of the Catholic Worker.

Neither Caholic nor Protestant, I will reflect, throughout September, on this Eucharistic Prayer:

"The aim of the Catholic Worker movement is to live in accordance with the justice and charity of Jesus Christ. Our sources are the Greek and Hebrew scriptures, as handed down in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, with our inspiration coming from the lives of the saints, Men and women outstanding in holiness, living witnesses to your unchanging love."

This aim requires us to begin living in a different way, as we recall the words of Jesus, the founders of the Catholic Worker Movement, and the saints of all the ages in the journey called life. Join me through the month of September as I reflect on the Aims and Means, the words of Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, and As I remember those who have taught me God's message, how they lived and died, that I might copy their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb. 13:7-8). Perhaps in my reflections you will find soup for the soul. I look forward to the discussion that might arise. It all begins tomorrow.

Remember the Journey

Have you ever thought that Heaven was a pretty lofty goal? Something, though hightly treasured, just a little out of reach? Heed the words of the Prophet Micah: O my people, remember the journey from Shittam to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of God" (Micah 6:5). Remember the journey, the kingdom of heaven is within you, sometimes the journey is the destination.

A Week at Work

Who would have guessed it? Me cooking for a living! Yes, you heard me right. What began as The humbling exercise of washing dishes, turned daily this week, into a life long dream. Oh, I am not a professional chef, I am only the line cook at a local resturant. And, my day does not begin and end on the line, I still wash dishes and prepare the line for other cooks; but here I am, sharing a life-time of experiences for the public palate. You cannot imagine my joy!

"Trust in the Lord and do good. Live in the land and feed on truth. Enjoy serving the Lord and he will give you what you want. Depend on the Lord; trust him, and he will take care of you. then your goodness will shine like the sun, and your fairness like the noonday sun. Wait and trust the Lord" (Pslam 37:3-7).

Working for Mark I have truly found, to my great joy, the meaning of Jeremiah 29:10:

"Build houses and settle in the land. Plant gardens and eat the food they grow. Get married and have sons and daughters. find wives for your sons, and let your daughters get married so they also may have sons and daughters. Have many children in Babylon; don't become fewer in number. Also do good things for the city where I sent you as captives. Pray to the Lord for the city where you are living, because if good things happen in the city, good things will happen to you also...I know what I am planning for you, says the Lord. I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you a hope and a good future" (Jeremiah 29:5, 11).

My goals, really all about me, have given way to His goals, and it is now, all about the community in which I live, for in Mark's propserity, I am finding my own. This is what it is to live in the perfect will of God. It is really not simply about contentment, it is about viewing the journey as the destination. Every day it's changing now, and I am finding that his plan, from the beginning, is what I wanted all along. The journey is the joy!!!

Failure, gateway to grace

After Jesus was crucified and raised from the dead, he appeared to his disciples. His first words to them were, "Peace be with you."

The word grace means "unmerited favour." When someone loves you unconditionally, without regard for your behaviour in return, it can become a powerful force in your life. such was the case for the disciples when Jesus appeared to them after his death and resurrection. They could have expected reprimand. Instead they received unconditional love and acceptance. He was as overjoyed to see them as they were to see him.

Jesus understands that we need to fail him as a part of our training as disciples. Failure allows us to experience the incredible grace that will transform us as human beings.

You are not really alone

Have you heard the story of how children are initiated into adulthood among First Nations? It is called a SOLO. The child is taken from the safety and comfort of his or her family and is lead out into the wilderness. There they are told that they must spend the coming night alone. They are left to their own devises.

You can imagine what an ordeal this might be. To untrained senses and to an unleased imagination, every sound would seem to foretell an attack by some fearsome night predator, and every shadow would conjure up a demon.

But, as day breaks and the sun rises, the child's first sight is their father! There in the darkness, standing silently just out of sight, all night long the father has stood, bow and arrow ready, watching over and protecting his child.

For you and I, as well, The Father is there all along, watching over us and protecting us from all harm. Let us run into his arms, crying with delight, "Father, you were there all along!"

Waiting on the Way

August 25, 2007
John Meyer:
"THE FURNACE DOOR IS OPENING-- A RELEASE OF PROPHETS WHO HAVE BEEN IN 'THE WAIT'"
A Building Process
Many of God's people who have ahold of their purpose and vision inside, are sensing a time of release. They have been behind closed doors, crying, laughing and trembling with their Lord and Savior. They have known what it means to reach the depths of anguish in their souls and minds and have felt at times that they could not go on any longer. They have tried to reach out through conversation to share their pain, but others who listened, could not relate. They've experienced a loneliness that has been physically felt and mentally challenging.
It's been a journey where all one could say is, "I don't know what is going on exactly, but God is good!" All the confessions, professions and proclamations seem to go out, but silence is all that is heard. The journey has been a prophetic process for the prophets and also for those who have been in the "building" process of the Lord, just waiting for their release and assignment on the earth. The season of preparation is often misunderstood by many who go through it. All we want to do sometimes is to get out of the fire, while God Himself is keeping us from leaving. Only He knows the full process of keeping us in the fire--until we walk out looking better, acting better and loving better. Many have tried to run out only to find themselves walking back into the furnace of refinement once again. God has always been in it with us, but somehow we think He has left us there to roast.
The Door is Opening
We are now entering into a time of release for many who have been going through the fire and have grown up in character. Standing on their feet, they hear the Master opening up the furnace door and saying, "It is now time." They are not running like before--they are walking with a maturity and confidence in their Lord, as they come through the door to enter their assignments.
This does not mean that all of a sudden everything will just happen and money will fall out of the trees for people, but what it does mean is that favor will be there when it is needed, with the work of their hands. It means that the weight of the gifting matches the weight of the character and the "appointed time" is now upon them. It means that they will not quickly fall like they used to when temptations come near them.
James understood this process and the importance of "The Wait" for maturity, "James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:1-4).
Many times when we read this Scripture, we automatically think of some major family or financial trial we go through and yes, these are trials. But for those who have been in the process of development, they have also been sorely tested in the battlefield of the mind regarding their calling. Some ponder if they have blown it with sin and wonder if it will happen, or they begin to think that God had never spoken to them in the first place. It is the plan of the enemy and the flesh to get us thinking this way, but patience has a divine and perfect plan.
The patience that has come through the trial, has now been developed to the point of release. It is the patience that is mature and complete--able to withstand testing and truly help others in need.
Mature Enough to Understand Temptation
James 1:12-17, "Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
The struggle to sort out what is happening and "who" is doing what to those in process, is often misunderstood and many people have even blamed God for their temptations during development. But, God has brought them to the point of maturity in the fire, where they no longer believe that lie and have now understood that the "Refining Fire" has been burning away their unclean thoughts and desires of wanting the release too soon and doing works in the flesh.
For some, the discipline of the Lord has been grueling and has been an unpleasant experience, and it is totally human to feel that way. Yet as maturity is developed, there is a knowledge and confidence inside, knowing the process produces a harvest of Godly character and peace.
Hebrews 12:11, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
The Time is Now Upon Many
The time is quickly approaching and others will see someone coming out of the Furnace, looking and smelling like God, who they thought would be completely burned up. These are the "unknowns" in society who will enter their callings, full of God's power and wisdom. They will know how to handle difficulties without breaking down emotionally. They will release practical, yet powerful insight from God's Word that will shatter strongholds and liberate the afflicted and oppressed.
It will truly be the demonstration of the Spirit without the "eloquence" of fleshly words being released as Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 2. It is a Supernatural release that will bring young and old to real repentance, because they have seen and have experienced the goodness of God in a tangible way.
For those who have understood the process of "The Wait," be encouraged! Your release is close at hand. Rejoice! For the Lord your God is opening the door of the furnace.

Yesterday the Cross and the Tomb

Yesterday: the cross and the tomb; today: the long vigil; Tomorrow: the RESURRECTION.

These are the days of transition. Today is the last day of the old; tomorrow begins the new. the new begins with worship. Yesterday the cross and the tomb; today the long vigil; tomorrow the resurrection. "If anyone belongs to Christ, there is a new creation. The old things have gone. Everything is made new" (2 Cor. 5:17) Forget the failures of the past. Look at the new thing God is doing. He is making a road in the emptiness and rivers in the dry land-Isa. 43:18-19. "I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I will continue trying to reach it and to make it mine...I know that I have not yet reached that goal, but there is one thing I will do, forgetting the failures of the past, I remember the promises of God and strain toward the possibilities which lie ahead. I will keep reaching toward the goal, to get the prize for which God has called me through Christ..." (Phil 3:12-14).

Saved by grace

We are not justified by works, and not by our faith, nor by what we believe, but by the matchless, unmerited grace of God.

It's A Long and Winding Road

The road is longWith many a winding turnThat leads us to who knows whereWho knows where But I'm strongStrong enough to carry him He ain't heavy, he's my brother.
So on we goHis welfare is my concern No burden is he to bear We'll get there For I knowHe would not encumber me He ain't heavy, he's my brother. If I'm laden at laden with sadness That everyone's heart Isn't filled with the gladness Of love for one another. It's a long, long road From which there is no return While we're on our way to there Why not share And the load Doesn't weigh me down at all He ain't heavy, he's my brother. He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

I Got A Name

I Got A Name Like the pine trees linin' the windin' road I've got a name, I've got a name Like the singin' bird and the croakin' toad I've got a name, I've got a name And I carry it with me like my daddy did But I'm livin' the dream that he kept hid Movin' me down the highwayRollin' me down the highwayMovin' ahead so life won't pass me byLike the north wind whistlin' down the sky I've got a song, I've got a song Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cryI've got a song, I've got a song And I carry it with me and I sing it loud If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud Movin' me down the highway Rollin' me down the highway Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by And I'm gonna go there free Like the fool I am and I'll always be I've got a dream, I've got a dream They can change their minds but they can't change me I've got a dream, I've got a dream Oh, I know I could share it if you want me to If you're going my way, I'll go with you Movin' me down the highway Rollin' me down the highway Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by.

Jim Croce's lyrics are spell binding

Stillness

I love the Kwak'wala translation of Matthew 5:9a. In English it reads: Blessed are the peacemakers...In Kwak'wala it reads Blessed wista da kyama kula masak nauka - The verse here is translated "Bleesed are those whose spirit is made the stillness of the ocean..." Kyama kula is that stillness that only ocean dwellers really understand. It is the stillness that is so still that birds will not land on the water. It has a quality of someone watching over all of creation. The silence almost has a taste.

Twice I have experienced this kyama kula. The first time I was kayaking near Cape Scott on the North End of Vancouver Island. I had paddled away from my companions, and suddenly I felt very alone, just flotsom on the sea. I understood in that moment just how small a part of creation I really am, just a drop of water in the ocean of life. Suddenly the feeling passed and I was surrounded by boats and by fisherfolk that had not been there a moment before. The second time I shared kyama kula was during a walk on the sea wall in Port Hardy. Everything went silent. The ocean was still and the gulls who normally crowd the waters could not seem to land. The stillness disturbed them, only the eagles soared above, rising motionless in the hot air currents. In these moments all of creation was still, standing in ABSOLUTE AWE of its Creator.

Psalm 23 comes to mind: "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters (kyama kula). He restores my soul. He leads me on paths of righteousness for his name sake, and yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. for you are with me. Your rod and your staff they comfort me. you spread a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever and forever."

Sometimes the JOURNEY is the DESTINATION

Sometimes we get confused! We think that the destination is at the end of the journey. It has been my experience that the journey itself is the destination. 46 years ago, I fell in love with the kitchen. As a gregarious 12 year old, I was learning to cook. I thought that this would be my work forever. By the time I was 18 I had plans to travel to Europe. I wanted to train as a French chef. Of course, finances prevented my travel, and I hung up my apron for a while. But cooking was to become what the French call "from the heart." I was an amature. I would, over the years, collect recipes and techniques for a wide variety of international foods, becoming adept at Greek, Japanese, Chinese, and First Nations cooking. But, I was never to arrive; that is until today. Beginning Monday, August 26, 2007, I will enter the kitchen as a professional. Starting from the bottom, I will first wash the dishes that others dirty, then I will prep the food for others cooking, finally I will graduate to the status of a line cook, doing all the final prepartations.

The journey has had many twists and turns; and this cannot be the end; but it is a mile post in my culunary life. It is not the destination at the end of the trail that holds my attention, but the trail itself. who would have thought that 46 years ago, my dream of culunary expertise would come in bits and pieces. I don't really know where it will end; it is simply too much fun "on the way."
